SOUL/R&B/Blues

BLUES WITH A RHYTHM Volume 2 (Doghouse & Bone) Second volume with more obscure rhythm and blues singles from the '60s. Tracks; Troubles / Lee Rogers (Mashs 0009)/ Catch Up With Your Crowd / Ricky Allen (Age 29120)/ Something For You Baby / Mary "B" (Fling 725)/ If Things Dont Change / Little Jimmy Griffin (R 508)/ Hoodo Party / Tabby Thomas (Excello 2212)/ Itty Bitty Love / Hannah Dean (Columbia 4-41768)/ I Dont Know / Calvin And Clarence (Fairlane 21018)/ Please, Please, Be Mine / El Pauling (Federal 12398)/ The Chase / Davey Jones (Glades 605)/ Looking For My Baby / Jimmy Dotson & Blue Boys (Zynn 511). 10" 13.90

JAMES BROWN Night Train / Think (Outta Sight RSV 061) Two iconic Mod/Soul tracks by the Godfather of Soul himself – JAMES BROWN and his Famous Flames. First spun at the Scene Club, London, by legendary DJ and label owner Guy Stevens, “Night Train” was originally a 12-bar blues instrumental and its roots can be traced as far back as 1940. Lyrics were first added in the early fifties but James Brown put his own stamp on it by shouting a list of cities off his East coast touring schedule. The energy of Brown’s delivery and the exotic sounding American locations caught the imagination of Britain’s young Mods and it’s never lost it’s appeal. “Think” is the title track from Brown’s third album and is a cover of the 1957 “5” Royales R&B hit. Brown makes it his own and transforms it into an insistant dance floor workout complete with an extended sax break. 7" 8.90

NAPPY BROWN Coal Miner/ Skidy Woe (Outta Sight RSV 069) NAPPY BROWN was born Napoleon Brown Goodson Culp in Charlotte, North Carolina. He joined Savoy Records in 1954 and went on to become one of the biggest R&B stars of the day with a string of hits that crossed over to the wider white audience. His unique vibrato style influenced many contemporary artists including Elvis Presley. Here we present his most collectable R&B side "Coal Miner" coupled with the Jump Blues rarity "Skidy Woe". 7" 8.90

ROY BROWN Butcher Pete Pt. 1 & 2 (Jukebox Jam) Roy Brown makes his third appearance on the Jukebox Jam series with 'Butcher Pete', an outrageously lewd uptempo Jump Blues banger. Originally cut on 78 only in 1950, using a somewhat gruesome double entendre the song warns husbands and boyfriends to watch out for Pete, newly arrived in town and indiscriminately 'chopping' through all the 'meat' in town using his 'long sharp knife'. It's a wonder how they got away with this stuff! 7" 7.90
ROY BROWN
I'm A Rockin Man / Everyhing's Alright (Jukebox Jam JBJ 1054) Mid-century R&B from one of the best artists of the blues shouter era - none other than Roy Brown. 'I'm A Rockin' Man' is, as its title suggests, a upfront and bold slab of Jump Blues machismo. Before Rock & Roll became established as a genre in itself, artists such as Roy Brown were laying the foundations, in both tone and attitude, with swaggering, brazenly libidinous floor-shakers like this. 7" 7.90

RUTH BROWN Tears Keep Tumbling Down / If I Had Any Sense (Atlantic RB110) Two more sexy sides from the queen of R&B sass, Ruth Brown. Here, Ruth is in a more sombre mood vocally on 'The Tears Keep Tumbling Down', even if the swaying, stomping backing music is still apt to set feet in motion. On the flip side, our girl laments her poor life choices on 'If I Had Any Sense' another powerful mid-tempo R&B sure shot sounding great on this loud pressed 45. 7" 7.90
RUTH BROWN Daddy Daddy / I Would If I Could (Atlantic) Back to back, two more sexy rhythm and blues jivers from the queen of sass, Ruth Brown. 'Daddy Daddy' gllides along a slinky, latin rumba beat as Ruth sings a lascivious ode to her lover. Turn it over and 'I Would If I Could' is built around a more straight-ahead pounding rhythm with horn and piano stabs contrasting nicely with Ruth Brown's high pitched vocals. repro 7"7.90

BUTTSHAKERS!! SOUL PARTY VOLUME 11 (Mr. Luckee) Subtitled as "Soul Lover Rhythm & Blues & Northern Soul" - Tracks: Harvey Scales & The Seven Sounds - I Can't Cry No More/ J.A. LP 14.50

Tracks: Georges Woods - Potato Salad Pt. 1/ The Miles Grayson Trio - Sweet Bread/ The Virginia Wolves - B.L.T./ Hank Mance & The Blues Faculty - Red Beans & Rice/ George Semper - Shortin' Bread/ Rockin' T Birds - Milkshakes/ Lee Austin - Screwdriver/ The Nite Sounds - Cheesecake/ Calvin & The Kernels - Corn Chips Pt. 1/ Maurice Simon & The Pie Men - Sweet Potato Gravy/ Eldrige Holmes - Popcorn Pop, Pop/ The Dums Dums - Tortilla/ Russell Evans & The Nite Hawks - Send Me Some Cornbread/ The Best Of Both Worlds - Momma Bakes Biscuits. Lp 14.50

THE CHANTERS & BROTHER WOODMAN She Wants to Mambo / Watts (Jukebox Jam JBJ1059) Lifted from the second volume of Jukebox Mambo, the Chanters 'She Wants To Mambo' absolutely epitomizes the sound, with the exotic rumba back-beat and stop-start rhythm - complete with obligatory 'unghh' vocal interjections - utilized to ramp up the sex factor. Chanters lead siren Ethel Brown (who also gave us 'Hot Mama' from the Jukebox Jam Vol 2 comp) is in particularly flirtatious mood as she coos and oohs back and forth with her backing singers. On the flip, another great side from the Chanters, and another rumba-laced track, this time cut for Chuck Higgins' Combo label and featuring a male lead, regaling us with a proud tribute to the groups hometown, the south central Los Angeles district of Watts. 7" 7.90

RAY CHARLES What'd I Say (Atlantic RB111) Landmark material here from Ray Charles, with one of his signature works and a song which inspired a million copycat attempts. 50 years on, 'What'd I Say' remains as fresh and exciting as ever before and is guaranteed to fill any dance floor in the known universe! repro 7" 7.90
RAY CHARLES Hide 'nor Hair/ Unchain My Heart / Hit The Road (Outta Sight RSV 062) Ray Charles needs no introduction to R&B and Northern Soul fans with his slue of collectable 45s including “What I’d Say”, “Compared To What”, “Go On Home”, “The Train”, “Something Inside Me”, I Don’t Need No Doctor” etc etc. But in recent times it is his earlier catalogue that has grabbed the dance floor action and here we celebrate 60 years of the “genius” with a 3-track mini EP featuring Ray’s original version of the Earl Grant classic “Hide ‘Nor Hair” plus the iconic “Unchain My Heart” and “Hit The Road Jack”. 7" 8.90

ARTHUR 'BLUES' CRUDUP She's My Baby/ The Moon Is Rising (Champion) WOW! Completely unreleased, unknown Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup (or Arthur "Blues" Crudup as he is known here) track and its a killer. Taken from an acetate recorded for Champion in Jackson, Mississippi from 1952, this is a fast Blues Stomper in the style of his Uptempo RCA sides. The flip is a great slower blues with a great slappin' Bass backing. 7" 7.90

PAUL GAYTEN For You My Love / Down Boy (Jukebox Jam JBJ 1067) Unissued Rhythm & Blues magic from the great New Orleans based bandleader Paul Gayten. 'For You My Love' is an uptempo romper with a groovy Latin rhythm and catchy melody, while 'Down Boy' is more of a slouching tempo, full of honking horns and playful vocals. Both sides were originally recorded for the Chess brothers Argo offshoot but went unreleased at the time. 7" 7.90

GIVE 'EM SOUL Volume 1 (Outta Sight) 14 cuts from 1953 to the early sixties feature key artists in the world of R&B and soul including Otis Redding, Big Maybelle, J J Jackson, Slim Harpo, Otis Blackwell and more. Tracks: The Dogs - Gil Bernal/ Don't Cry No More - Eugene Jefferson/ That's Why I Cry - Varetta Dillard/ Gettin' Hip - Otis Redding/ Oh! VERNON GREEN & THE MEDALLIONS A Lover's Prayer/ Shedding Tears For You (Popcorn POPC141) Beautiful group vocal rhythm & blues from Vernon Green & The Medallions, 'A Lovers Prayer' is a smouldering gem guaranteed to get the dancefloor moving. Laid back, subtle and played in minor key, the song also epitomizes the kind of moody mid-tempo R&B tunes which caught on with the Belgian popcorn scene - records whose understated feel meant they were likely neglected on other music scenes for a good while. But not now! 7" 7.90

JOHN LEE HOOKER Dimples/ Boom Boom/ She's Mine (Outta Sight RSV 064) JOHN LEE HOOKER, million-selling blues icon, cemented his place in the Northern Soul hall of fame with his legendary 1964 appearance at Manchester's Twisted Wheel, captured forever by blues archivist, photographer Brian Smith. On that same UK tour Hooker played the hit TV show Ready Steady Go! performing his 1956 recording "Dimples" propelling it into the UK charts, peaking at No. 23. Here we feature the best of Hooker's self-penned, uptempo 45s, recorded for the black owned Chicago label Vee-Jay. 7" 8.90

HOWLIN' WOLF Moanin' At Midnight/ Smokestack Lightning (Outta Sight RSV 068) HOWLIN' WOLF, aka Chester Arthur Burnett, was one of the giants of Chicago Blues, both in terms of his booming vocals and his physical stature. Both sides featured here were Billboard R&B hits and contributed to Rolling Stone magazine voting him number 51 in the "Greatest Artists of All Time". Wolf's debut solo 78 rpm single, "Moanin' At Midnight", was released on both Chess and RPM in 1951 and became the title track to his debut 1958 LP. A mint copy of the LP will set you back over $1,000 today but the song is available here, remastered, along with the classic "Smokestack Lightning" for under a tenner! 7" 8.90

HYPNOTIC CAJUN & OBSCURE ZYDECO Volume 2 (Moi J'Connais) A trip into the South of Louisiana, where this music -a blend of worlds and traditions- took shape at the beginning of the 20th century. It's a selection of tracks from the past, featuring local legends (Nathan Abshire) and unknown craftsmen (Jimmy Peters), who all, in their own way, have left their indelible mark. Waltz, two-step, one-step, blues, the record pays tribute to the unique blend of European dances with African rhythms. Each track has been weighed up for its historical as well as for its musical interest. A combination of melodeon and, for the Zydeco side, button accordion, triangle, rub board and fiddles. This LP comes with sleeve notes and a poster from one of the masters of Cajun fiddle, Dennis McGhee. Presented in a silk screened cover and limited to 1.000 copies. LP 18,90

ETTA JONES Nature Boy / LOREZ ALEXANDRIA Nature Boy (Popcorn POPC 136) Two beautiful covers of Eden Ahbez's evergreen standard, Nature Boy. As first recorded in 1948 by Nat King Cole, the song went on to be performed by just about everybody, from Frank Sinatra to David Bowie! Here, we put together two complimentary versions by female Jazz vocalists, both slow, sultry and simmering, tipping them into the popcorn sphere. repro 7" 7.90

KING COLEMAN Down In The Basement / Crazy Feelin (Jukebox Jam JBJ 1063)Tremendous twin-spin two sider from larger than life, cult hero King Coleman. Famous for singing - uncredited - 'The Mashed Potatoes', the 1959 dance craze hit with backing from James Brown's band, Coleman's career was much more varied and lengthy than such fleeting infamy would otherwise suggest. Here, we have Coleman appearing on two early 60s, low slung and sleazy R&B dancers, both 'Down in The Basement' and 'Crazy Feelin' are total killers. repro 7" 7.90

LA NOIRE Volume 5: Too Many Cooks (Doghouse & Bone) 14 tracks from original 45's, housed in a gatefold sleeve. Tracks: Too Many Cooks - Jessie Fortune / Dorothy Mae - John Hill Louis/ Mellow Down Easy - Little Walter & His Jukes/ The Woodchuck - Billy 'The Kid' Emerson/ I Wanna Ramble - Little Junior Parker/ Romp & Stomp Blues - Mercy Dee/ Last Night (I Was In Heaven) - Jimmy Lewis/ Mother-In-Law Blues - Junior Parker & Bill Harvey's Band/ Fickle Women - John J. Moses/ That's My Baby - Junior Parker & Bill Harvey's Band/ B-A-B-Y - Tall Miller/ Messed Up - Harold Burrage/ Mojo Workout - Larry Bright/ Fly Paper Boogie - L.B. Lawson. Gatefold LP 13.90

LITTLE JOHNNY TAYLOR Somewhere Down The Line/ What You Need is a Ball (Fryers FRY 025) 'Somewhere Down The Line' has been a huge mod / R&B essential spin for many years now, and it's not hard to see why. With it's bluesy harmonica and guitar riff married up to a full, swinging horn section, the production perfectly encapsulates the developing early 60s sound, where blues and R&B eventually gave way to soul. Little Johnny Taylor was the perfect exponent of this sound too, a singer who came of adult age himself in the early 60s, obviously inspired by the blues sounds of his early childhood, but contemporary to the singers who were inspiring the new genre shift at the time. The b-side 'What You Need Is A Ball' is perhaps closer still to a pure soul sound, but still with that earthy blues backbone and groove which proves so tough to stay still to7" 7.90

LITTLE MARGIE Yes It's You / BIG BOY GROVES Another Ticket (Jukebox Jam JBJ 1060) Two originally unissued sides from the Los Angeles Cash based label here appearing on 45 for the first and likely last time ever! Slowing the pace down, the top side features a lovely, melancholic midtempo blues ballad with sure popcorn appeal. Seemingly based on the melody from 'Why Don't You Do Right', obscure singer Little Margie delivers an endearing vocal turn while the band behind her really cooks. A perfect warm up or end of nighter play. Little Margie also features on the flip alongside Big Boy Groves (aka Ervin Rucker), with an alternative take or follow up to his novelty R&B number 'Traffic Ticket', itself a kind of answer to his 'I Got A New Car' as released on Spark. repro 7" 7.90

LITTLE RICHARD Rip It Up / Ready Teddy (RB 112 - Specialty) Stone cold essential twin spin from the real King of Rock & Roll - none other than Richard Wayne Penniman, aka, Little Richard. Seminal, piano bashing, high octane New Orleans screamers back to back! Not much left to be said about these landmark recordings, except throw on either side of this double sided stick of vinyl dynamite and watch the dance floor erupt! 7" 7.90

BUDDY LUCAS I Can't Go / Get Away Fly (Popcorn POPC138) Most prolific as a session player, Buddy Lucas nevertheless recorded a good sized handful of truly great R&B sides through the 50s. His 'I Can't Go' is probably the most dancefloor friendly, a stripped back exercise in rhythm, riff and atmosphere. Flip it over for a slow 'n' sleazy number about an unwanted encounter with a pesky fly. 7" 7.90

JOE MAYFIELD I'm On The Move/ LITTLE FLORENCE Miss You So (Excello) Two obscure releases from the legendary Nashville, Tennessee label Excello. Joe Mayfield's 'I'm On The Move' is an uptempo, driving rhythm and blues cut based around a catchy guitar and horn riff and a head bopping rhythm section. On the flip is unknown singer Little Florene with a great cover of 'Miss You So', a song which is already a classic in R&B circles thanks to versions by Tiny Topsy and Lillian Offitt. 7" 7.90

ROSE MITCHELL Baby Please Don't Go / Live It Up (Imperial) Two fantastic and classic cuts by Rose Mitchell with possibly the most powerful version of the blues standard ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’ that you’re ever likely to hear. This is a super limited reissue that comes on blue vinyl - get it while it's hot! 7" 7.90

SYLVIE MORA Summertime / Taboo (Popcorn POPC 134) Two sublime sides from femme fatale Sylvie Mora. Both Summertime and Taboo are of course well established standards, but the treatment here of each is really unique. Summertime gets a truly expansive work over, switching between soft and slow paced acapella vocal sections which then erupt into explosive brass and drum-led riffs. On the other side, Taboo, perhaps the quintessential jazz exotica work of the early to mid-century, sounds more seductive than ever before by virtue of Mora's sultry, slinky vocals, and once again the backing orchestra is fantastic. 7" 7.90

OUT ON THE FLOOR Part 2 (Inferno) "Follow up" to the 1979 released Northern Soul compilation on the Inferno label, incliding three tracks of that classic LP, plus 13 others.: Exus Trek - Luther Ingram Orchestra/ I'm Not Strong Enough - The Four Perfections/ Burning Sensation - Robby Lawson/ You Don't Want Me No More - Major Lance/ You're Gonna Make Me Love You - Sandi Sheldon/ You Don't Mean Me No Good - The Jellybeans/ One More Hurt - Marjorie Black/ Your Autumn Of Tomorrow - The Crow/ 'Cause You're Mine - The Vibrations/ The Right Track - Billy Butler/ Just Like You Did Me - Yvonne Vernee/ You Better Go Go - Matt Lucas/ I Really Love You - Jimmy Burns/ I Still Love You - The Superlatives/ (Me & You) Doin' The Boogaloo - Lou Courtney/ I Found Satisfaction - Billy Woods. 180 gram LP 20.90

GINO PARKS Fire / For This I Thank You (Jukebox Jam JBJ 1053) Gino Parks career took off when he moved to Detroit in the mid-50s. Beginning with a number of duets with the notorious Andre Williams for the equally legendary Fortune label, Parks then appeared as a solo artist for Berry Gordy's then fledgling Tamla stable. These two sides appeared in 1962 on the second of three singles cut for Tamla. 7" 7.90

PROFILES Take A Giant Step / JOHNNY APPALACHIAN Up In Smoke (Outta Sight RSV 063) Two fabulous, collectable, sides from the Goldie label that proudly boasted “Here’s a Goldie For You” on every disc. The top side is “Take A Giant Step” by The Profiles, a stunning beater that belies its 53 years old age, little wonder that it has drawn such a following from Northern Soul collectors. The B-side is also a winner by the unlikely sounding Johnny Appalachian, “Up In Smoke”. Both sides were penned by Carl Spencer who scored many a jingle alongside Jimmy Radcliffe and also gave us the classic “Cover Girl”. 7" 8.90

JIMMY RICKS Oh! What A Feeling / JO STAFFORD What A Feeling (Popcorn POPC 133) Beautifully soulful minor key midtempo popcorn R&B from the barrel-voiced Jimmy Ricks, lead on so many great records through the 50s, and as this shows, more still through the 60s. A long time presence on the soul and R&B scene, yet somehow not reissued until now. On the flip, Jo Stafford's piece may have a similar title, but it works more in contrast to the top side, a breezy, upfront piece of pure bold feminine sass. 7" 7.90

NINA SIMONE My Baby Just Cares For Me / Work Song (Outta Sight RSV 066) NINA SIMONE was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina but adopted her stage name, Nina Simone, in 1954, partly to hide her secular singing success from her Methodist minister mother. She took Nina from the Spanish for Little Girl and Simone from the French actress Simone Signoret. She recorded her landmark debut album Little Girl Blue for Bethlehem Records in 1958. Despite including the Top 20 hit single "I Loves You, Porgy" and her cool jazz standard "My Baby Just Cares For Me", Simone never saw a dime in royalties, an estimated loss of over $1 million! Here we couple "My Baby Just Cares For Me" with her jazzy version of Oscar Brown Jr's civil rights message "Work Song", a fitting tribute to Simone's life-long campaigning for racial equality. 7" 8.90

SLIM HARPO I Got Love If You Want It / I'm A King Bee (Outta Sight RSV 065) Now also as an Outta Sight 45 (why?): SLIM HARPO, aka James Moore, hit pay dirt with his debut solo 45 for Excello Records in 1957. "I'm A king Bee" was originally released earlier the same year as the B-side but was quickly identified as the more popular track. The Rolling Stones covered it for their debut album in 1964 and the song finally received a Grammy, for historical significance, in 2008. The 'other' side, "I Got Love If You Want It", is also of great significance. Mod icon Peter Meaden famously reinvented it as "The Face" for the inaugral single of his fledgling band The Who, rebranded as The High Numbers. 7" 8.90

SLOW GRIND FEVER Volume 5 (Stag-O-Lee) 14 more cuts compiled by SGF mastermind Richie1250 from Melbourne: The Hollywood Flames - Let’s Talk It Over/ Rose Hardaway - Senor Blues/ The Marquis - Strange Is Love/ Hillard Street With Jack Marshall’s Music - Comprende/ Steve King & The Echelons - Satan Is Her Name/ Johnny Burnette - Touch Me/ Dee Clark - Fever/ The Night Caps - Haunted Sax/ Birdie Green - Tremblin'/ The Shields - Nature Boy/ Nappy Brown With Teacho Wiltshire's Orch. - My Baby/ Singin' Sammy Ward - Who's The Fool/ King Coleman - Crazy Feelin'/ April Stevens - I Want A Lip. LP 14.50

JOANIE SOMMERS / CLEO JONS Why Don't You Do Right (Popcorn POPC-132) Originally recorded in 1936 as 'Weed Smokers Dream' by the Harlem Hamfats, the drug references were significantly toned down for Lil Green's 1941 update 'Why Don't You Do Right'. Since then the song has been a jazz standard, perhaps reaching a peak of infamy with its inclusion in the 1980s film 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit'. Paired here are two smoldering, female vocal takes on the song, both from the late 50s R&B era so cherished by popcorn collectors and DJs. 7" 7.90

BARRETT STRONG / GINO PARKS Rarer Stamps Volume 1 (Outta Sight) OUTTA SIGHT presents the first in a new series of Long Play albums pairing two soul music luminaries. Rarer Stamps draws its inspiration from the album Rare Stamps issued by Volt Reoords a Stax subsidiary in 1969. The original LP was the inspiration of Al Bell and was one of 3 Rare Stamps collections each featuring archive material from Eddie Floyd, Johnnie Taylor and splitting the 3rd package between JJ Barnes and Steve Mancha. The Barnes/Mancha pairing went on to become an iconic album, an essential part of any respectable soul collection. Here we bring together two of Detroit's finest, the mighty Barrett Strong and the much overlooked Gino Parks. Each side spotlights the best of their hot R&B action plus a super rare 45: in the case of Barrett Strong we include his first and rarest Tamla recording "Let's Rock", and from Gino we feature the incredibly obscure Detroit doo-wop cut "Last Night I Cried". Start your stamp collection today! LP 20.90

SUGAR BOY CRAWFORD Watch Her, Whip Her / You Call Everybody Sweetheart (Checker 541)Two unissued sides from New Orleans bluesman Sugarboy Crawford here, originally recorded for Checker. And what can we say about the 'Watch Her, Whip Her' except that it may just be the least-PC R&B side we've ever encountered. Lyrically, the song is clearly a relic from a whole other era, with it's apparently humorously intended domestic violence theme difficult to really fathom in this thankfully more enlightened era. Regardless, the music and playing is first rate on both sides, with a top notch N'awlins ensemble underpinning both tracks with a clattering, down-home rumba. 7" 7.90

TIC AND TOC Jibba Jab/ TIMMIE ROGERS Teedle Dee Teedle Dum (Jukebox Jam-JBJ 1057) Absolutely essential, standard-setting Rock & Roll insanity from Tic & Toc with their wig-flipping anthem 'Jibba Jab'. No doubt some folks might discount this as a mere novelty, a throwaway bit of fun, and nothing more, but surely the more learned ear recognizes 'Jibba Jab' as the true masterpiece that it is. On the flip side, the equally deranged, if lesser known, 'Teedle Dee Teedle Dum' by Timmie Rogers orchestra, a 140mph piece of deranged scat jazz which like 'Jibba Jab' features vocals and tenor sax blows by Big Nick 'Toc' Nicholas. 7" 7.90

MILTON TRENIER Gonna Catch me A Rat/ DEAN JONES St. James Infirmary (Forty 5) MILTON TRENIER, one of the famed Trenier brothers, also enjoyed a prolific solo career that produced this 1959 Dot recording “Gonna Catch Me A Rat”. A hard to find 45 that has been picking up a lot of plays in the R&B Clubs and is rising in value – catch one while you can! DEAN JONES recorded his version of “St. James Infirmary” in 1960 and is one of a number of versions that are currently picking up plays across Europe. A hard to find original on the 88 Brand logo. The song is a traditional American folk song that proved popular with Blues artists and was made famous by Louis Armstrong. 7" 8.50

'CILE TURNER Crap Shootin' Sinner/ BIRDIE GREEN Tremblin' (Forty 5) 'CILE TURNER, or Lucile Turner was a popular NBC radio host who presented a weekly show promoting traditional African-American music and folk stories that she collected on her many journeys across the South. 'Crap Shootin' Sinner' finds her in top form on an atmospheric tale of a gambler's delight. A hard to find original Colonial 45 from 1959. BIRDIE GREEN is best known for her original End 45 'How Come' / 'Tremblin'' recorded in 1962. Both sides have been popular on the Belgium Popcorn scene but here we showcase the more intense 'Tremblin''.7" 8.50

IKE & TINA TURNER A Fool In Love/ It's Gonna Work Out Fine (Outta Sight RSV 067) IKE & TINA TURNER are, of course, the stuff of legend and there is little that we can add here other than to reiterate the global appeal of the husband and wife duo. Ike, from Clarksdale, Mississippi had already established himself as a guitarist, composer and producer by the time he married Anna Mae Bullock from Nutbush, Tennessee. As 'The Ike & Tina Turner Revue' they become one of the most explosive live R&B acts of all time and their debut 45 "A Fool In Love" is featured here. Our chosen B-side, "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", was recorded in 1961 and actually features the male vocals of Mickey Baker while Ike is relegated to piano accompanied by Sylvia Robinson on guitar. Both sides scored a No.2 Billboard R&B hit. 7" 8.90

TWISTED WHEEL The Sound Of Manchester's Twisted Wheel, Brazennose & Whitworth Street 1963-1971 (Outta Sight) A homage to Manchester's iconic Twisted Wheel Club with 14 original tracks culled from the club's rich R&B and soul history. When the Wheel opened it's doors to Manchester's new wave Modernists in September 1963 - with DJ Roger Eagle behind the decks - the course of rare soul music in the UK was set to change. Eagle was a rare breed R&B pioneer and soul preacher who captured the imagination of the North's musical youth and introduced them to the obscure, unheard, exotic and intoxicating world of black American dance music. Here, we present a soundbite spanning the clubs 8 year reign, and both of its venues. Side A represents the Wheel's R&B roots cemented in Brazennoise Street, while Side B documents the birth of Nothern Soul, forever synonymous with Whitworth Street. Tracks: Booker T. & The M.G.s - Green Onions/ John Lee Hooker - Dimples/ Howlin' Wolf - Smokestack Lightning/ James Brown And The Famous Flames - Night Train/ Buddy Guy - I Got My Eyes On You/ Bo Diddley - Pretty Thing/ The Mar-Kets - Balboa Blue/ Lee Dorsey - Ride Your Pony/ Major Lance - Hey Little Girl/ Shades Of Blue - Oh How Happy/ Taj Mahal - A Lot Of Love/ The Incredibles - There's Nothing Else To Say/ Walter Jackson - Where Have All The Flowers Gone/ Arthur Alexander - You Better Move On. LP 20.90

WANDERERS / RUTH PRICE Shadrach Meshack and Abednego / Shadrach (Popcorn POPC135) Two contrasting takes on the biblical tale of Shadrach Meshach and Abednego. Vocal group the Wanderers' version is an uptempo, bopping doo wop rocker whilst Jazz siren Ruth Price performs an almost scat vocal over a sparse but energetic beatnik-style drum backing. 7" 7.90

HAL WATERS St James Infirmary / GENE STRIDEL Let her Go (Popcorn POPC139) The song 'St. James Infirmary' existed in American folk traditions since the 18th or 19th century, but it entered the modern popular music lexicon with Louis Armstrong's 1928 rendition. Since then, it became a standard for many blues and jazz singers, recorded perhaps a thousand times or more. Hal Waters' fantastic version from 1960 is notably uptempo and swinging, complete with conga drum breakdowns and jazzy horn stabs. On the flip, Gene Stridel's 'Let Her Go' is a riff on 'St James Infirmary' with lyrics which play out as a kind of sequel to the original. The backing music, mid tempo and heavy on atmosphere and drama is pure popcorn! 7" 7.90

JOHNNY WATSON I Say I Love You / Sweet Lovin' Mama (Jukebox Jam JBJ 1068) All time great, evergreen R&B dancer from the legendary Johnny Guitar Watson. With its call and response vocals and snappy riff, on 'I Say I Love You' Watson comes across a little like Ray Charles with more casual, streetwise attitude. And don't let the middle tempo fool you, this is about as infectious as it gets and a guaranteed floor filler every time. On the flip, 'Sweet Lovin Mama' is another cool R&B side that Watson cut for King Records in the early 60s - slightly less known than 'I Say I Love You' but ripe for a little more exposure. 7" 7.90

JACKIE WEAVER The Tingle/ TAWNY WILLIAMS Pretty Little Words (Forty 5 PSV-003) JACKIE WEAVER, recorded Billy Sherrill’s infectious “Tingle” in 1961 for the Chicago based Chess label. Sherrill went on to become a country music producer and arranger, most associated with Tammy Wynette and George Jones. TAWNY WILLIAMS was one of Abner Spector’s Tuff Records artists along with the likes of Bobby Treetop, Jackie Day, Roscoe Robinson and Kendra Spotswood. She recorded two 45s, both excellent, and here we feature the first, “Pretty Little Words” from 1962. 7"8.50

BILLY WILLIAMS Pied Piper/ NICK TODD Too Much Rosita (Popcorn POPC137) Two male vocal sides, topped with Billy Williams 'Pied Piper', a pretty uptempo sound by popcorn standards, but either way full of character and easy charm.Much the same could be said of 'Too Much Rosita' from Nick Todd (interestingly enough the younger brother of Pat Boone), a swinging little number very much in the Belgian mould. 7" 7.90

JUMPIN JOE WILLIAMS Voodoo Blues/ ROYALS Gas Happy Mama (Jukebox Jam JBJ1062) Once again we use our R&B imprint, the Jukebox Jam series to release top quality R&B on 45 rpm for the first time, with these two originally unissued cuts from the Okeh vaults finally seeing a DJ friendly vinyl pressing. And two great sides they are too, with Jumpin' Joe Williams' super cool vocal track 'Voodoo Blues' featuring superior accompaniment from Red Saunders and co, and arranged by the one and the only Sun Ra! On the flip, the Royals' 'Gas Happy Mama' is a raucous, uptempo group vocal romper! 7" 7.90

YOUNG JESSIE You Were Meant For Me / Mary Lou (Jukebox Jam) Two incredible sides from the legendary Young Jessie. 'You Were Meant For Me' is a timeless piece of jazzy, dancefloor blues from the rapidly changing early '60s era. On the flipside, an equally excellent updated reworking of Young Jessie's 1956 hit 'Mary Lou'. Cut during his stint with Mercury Records, both sides boast superb production and impeccable musicianship, and of course that trademark, oaky baritone of Obie Jessie himself. 7" 7.90
YOUNG JESSIE Pretty Soon / Well Baby (Jukebox Jam JBJ 1058) Two great R&B sides from Young Jessie, both appearing on 45rpm for the very first time! Both 'Pretty Soon' and 'Well Baby' were originally recorded for the Bihari brothers Modern label in the mid-50s, and whilst the former did appear on an early 60s budget compilation album on the Crown off-shoot, 'Well Baby' surfaced a lot more recently on a CD retrospective. What isn't clear is why these great recordings were canned in the first place, but either way this welcome 45rpm pressing is surely a must-have for the R&B fiends. 7" 7.90

THE AQUANAUTS RUMBLE ON THE DOCKS / BOMBORA (SAFARI S-1005) Stunning early 60'S Moody Surf Instro 2 sider. Super tough To Find on original Pressing. 7" 6.50

CHARLES BLACKWELL Taboo (TTShake TTS 121) Charles Blackwell's uptempo dance floor targeted rendition of 'Taboo' is a swinging orchestral piece with a very big sound indeed. The song was originally recorded in the '30s by the Lecuona Cuban Boys, and 'Tabu' or 'Taboo' quickly became a staple of exotic jazz and more in the years that followed. Given possibly a thousand interpretations, on the flip we pick another cool version of the song. This time heavy on the drums and bongos, with the infamous melody played out on a distant organ with accompanying horn stabs. Lifted from an uncredited acetate, this appears on vinyl for the first time ever! repro 7" 7.90

JACK COSTANZO Mr. Bongo (Jazzman) "26 red hot skin slappin' bongo bashin' latin jazz n' mambo bangers". RONNIE KAE Swinging Drums / Swimming Drums (TT SHAKE TTS 120) Wigged out craziness from drummer Ronny Kae. Swinging Drums is the name of the track, but Demented Drums might be more apt as Ronny rolls the toms to a twanging one string guitar riff and a suitably crazed voice interjects with dance instructions for the hepped up teens at the sock hop - simple enough commands such as 'Go Go Go - Go Everybody!' On the flip side, a variation on the winning formula with 'Swimming Drums'. Not sure what swimming drums are, but the effect is just as great! 7" 7.90

REVELS Intoxica / Comanche (TTShake TTS 122) Two out and out 'Pulp Fiction' classics of the wild and sleazy Rock and Roll instrumental genre. 'Intoxica' is well titled - on it the guitarist sounds like he's been slipped a couple of wallbangers as he lackadaisically strums out a slowed up surf riff while in the background a honky tonk piano jostles for air with a groaning, rasping sax and all the while strange and no doubt inebriated voices interject with unprompted laughter as a menacing voice exclaims the songs title! On the flip, 'Comanche' is a more uptempo and even wilder romp, well known and loved from its prominent appearance in the cult Tarantino flick. 7" 7.90

WAILERS Mashi / On The Rocks (TTShake TTS 119) Though the term had yet to be coined back then, The Fabulous Wailers have since been referred to as the first Garage Rock outfit ever. Hailing from Tacoma, Washington, the same city that birthed the Sonics and many other notable Garage groups besides, the Wailers begun their career in the late 50s. Their sound was an organic fusion of Rhythm & Blues and Rock and Roll that sounded like little else before it. Mashi, a frenetic, uptempo instrumental grinder is typical of the group's sound, which like the more languid and sleazy On The Rocks, still sounds remarkably fresh more than fifty years later. 7" 7.90

THE SLAVES Shut Up! We’re The Slaves (Be! Sharp) September 1965: After a Stones concert in Vienna, Mick Jagger and his entourage see beat band The Slaves in a local club. They are impressed. The Stones' Swiss promoter Hans Ruedi Jaggi signs them straight away and organizes tours in Germany, France and Switzerland, announcing them as the "beat band from hell." The Slaves (including 14-year-old guitarist Karl Ratzer, who'd later play with Chaka Khan) released three singles in 1966 and quickly became real pop stars in Switzerland. As a resault the band shared bills with f.i. The Kinks and German heroes The Lords. In April 1966, at the peak of the band's career, the Slaves traveled to London to record an album for EMI, but they fell out and the band dissolved. Their singles for Philips - all of them raw garage punk - rank among the most exceptional and most wanted intercontinental '60s releases. Here you have all six single sides on one 10-inch mini-LP! Tracks: Slaves Time/ You Are The Only One/ Shut Up!/ Never Free/ Panic/ Get Out Of My Way. 10" 15.90

SUNSETS Animal / Uptight, Out Of Sight (Blank Records) Two completely unreleased, undiscovered, undocumented Sunsets sides! In May 1967 The Sunsets single 'The Hot Generation' b/w 'This Is What It's All About' was issued to co-incide with the release of the Australian surf film of the same name. Both songs were featured in the movie soundtrack. The film was screened, and scheduled for release was another single from The Sunsets, comprising two more songs from the movie. 'Animal' b/w 'Uptight, Out Of Sight' was prepared to be released in August 1967, but one way or the other, it didn't happen. Since then both sides have sat untouched in the Festival label's tape vaults. UNTIL NOW!!!!! 7" 12.90

TRAVEL AGENCY Jail BAit / Hard Times (Break-A-Way) Reissue of an impossibly rare '67 garagepunk single, recorded by a 4-piece from Chicago and originally out on the local Zordan label. The A-side 'Jailbait' is a true scorcher, which the band's bass player, vocalist and songwriter Bill Gradisher wrote with 'Louie Louie' in mind. This track also appeared on Vol. 7 of the 'Back From The Grave series'. The flip contains the equally exciting trashrocker 'Hard Times'. Back in the day this single -featuring teen sex tinged lyrics!- was the band's sole release, with originals nowadays fetching up to $400. Now here's a new edition, manufactured in a run of 500 copies. The single is presented in a full colour picture sleeve with a coloured insert. 7" € 8.90

Then there are eye-opening stories on San Francisco's demented proto-punks Psycotic Pineapple, the Flamin' Groovies, you get reviews and much much more. Label info: Wild, 60’s Norsebeat/garage punk-LP by The Zaks from icy Northern Norway, containing 15 killer, original, scorching tracks, guaranteed to endanger the arctic glaciers! CRIME Murder By Guitar (Superior Viaduc) San Francisco's first and only rock n' roll band, CRIME loomed over the entire Mabuhay Gardens scene with their blistering 1976 single 'Hot Wire My Heart.' CRIME's loose, damaged rock n' roll was as immediate as it was controversial. They were punk by any definition, yet shunned the label with a guttersnipe sneer. Their meticulously cultivated aesthetic of S&M graphics and police uniforms produced some of the era's most indelible imagery. One of their finest moves was playing in the San Quentin prison yard. Formed by guitarists/vocalists Johnny Strike and Frankie Fix, CRIME enlisted bassist Ron The Ripper and drummers Ricky "Tractor" Williams (later of The Sleepers), Brittley Black, and Hank Rank. Joey D'Kaye later joined on keyboards and bass duties. For the first time, this LP release collects the sick energy of CRIME's three singles along with nine previously unreleased studio recordings from 1976 to 1980. Includes download. LP 24.90

THE DAMNED Damned Damned Damned - reissue of the german pressing of this classic. LP 12.90

ELECTRIC EELS Die Electric Eels (Superior Viaduc) Cleveland's Electric Eels is America's quintessential proto-punk band. Formed in 1972 by singer Dave E. McManus and guitarists John Morton and Brian McMahon, the group enlisted drummer Nick Knox (later of The Cramps) and producer Paul Marotta to record a flurry of catchy and genuinely fucked-up tunes. After only five legendary live performances -complete with Dave E. in black leather jacket covered in rat-traps and playing a gas-powered lawnmower on stage- the Eels broke up in 1976 and posthumously released their classic single' Agitated' on Rough Trade in 1978, blazing a trail for high-art, low-concept rock. As Jon Savage writes in the liner notes, "There is something heroic about the Eels' isolation and uncompromising attitude: a fierceness that you can hear in these songs that still resonates in a different time and world." Retrospective LP of seminal Cleveland band, circa 1975. From the loud and snotty 'Agitated' and its B-side 'Cyclotron' (which Johan Kugelberg listed as #1 in his top 100 punk singles) to the anarchic anthem 'Jaguar Ride' and the loose, bluesy sludge of 'Anxiety,' the album exorcises the demonic power of the Stooges and Velvets and captures the mystique of these outsider artists inventing a new language. As the Eels demand 'Attendance Required' on their flyer for the infamous 'Special Extermination Music Night', listening is absolutely mandatory for this seminal band. Recommended for fans of Dead Boys, Simply Saucer and Pagans. LP 24.90

T.I.T.S I Told You I Was Sick/ Kashmere Trap (Pollymaggoo Records) Ttwo new songs recorded by T.I.T.S ?during the middle of their spring 2014 tour. Drawing on the influences one would expect from any tasty modern band (e.g. 70s punk, 60's psych, Crime, Germs, Flipper, fine 90's garage-noise etc.) Paris' T.I.T.S have ?created a very ugly/twisted/rocking sound that is all their own. «I told you I was sick» is a prime shot of brooding, midtempo punk rawk bile. The similarly sinister flip «Kashmere Trap» is a slow grinder, again with a memorable hook but now under a frenzy of guitar feedback. 7" 7.50
